Holi-Holidays…

Almost there….

WHOOOO for productivity!

These holidays have been great, I’m powering my way though a list of things to get finished before the end of the year.
During the year we have to produce six photo assignments, and so far I’ve done 4 so that leaves 2 to complete next term which is good. I have two main assignments left, bicultural and news video. Not that it’s very exciting for you to read, but it feels pretty relieving to share it out there.

So I’ve spent a few days in the Witt newsroom doing work, and studying shorthand. I’ll be working at Countdown tomorrow 9.30am – 11pm, so next few days I’ll be pretty dead but that’s okay because it’ll mean I’ll have plenty of money when I head to Auckland next week. Need to get the windows of my car tinted before the voucher expires…yes it’s one of those online deals that I couldn’t resist, hehe.

That all aside, I am SUPER excited for Mary Poppins The Musical at the end of the month! A very gay comment, yes, but when I saw the show in Brisbane I LOVED it, so I’m looking forward to sharing it with Dad and Glyn when it hits Auckland in a few weeks. YAY =D

Internships….I still haven’t found a place, but I will! I’m determined.

Back to it..

October!

Welcome to October! The tenth month in the year, one of seven months with a 31-day length.

In some cultures, the month is lableled “National Pizza Month”, “National Pork Month” and “National Sausage Month”, but I see it as “Hello Daylight Savings Month!”

I’m a big, big fan of daylight savings and the end of winter. It means tasteful barbecues out on the deck, a few wines or beers with friends, long walks along the New Plymouth waterfront…it’s magical.

Right now, I’m checking out my new Teeline dictionary. It’s purpose is to help me work on my special outlines (shorter symbols/combinations of symbols that represent words and phrases), and so I have more shorthand information at my finger tips. Already I can tell it’s going to be very useful.

I had a realisation this morning – I understand Teeline! It’s incredible. I think I’ve finally grasped it. Now, it’s time to work on speed – and fast. There’s only five weeks of class left.

I’ve crossed all my fingers and toes and I am praying to the lord above that something works out in terms of intenship, which is in three weeks. I have really struggled to find somewhere, and it’s not a great feeling. But chin up, and carry on!

It’s holidays right now so instead of vacationing with JK Rowling’s new book under a tree, you’ll probably find me at the Witt newsroom working though assignments and other work. Bah. Oh well. Got to get it done!

Keep cool.

The Catch Up Rush

Kia Ora world.

This week is all about catching up – with only 5 weeks of class time left on the course (not including 2 weeks holidays which start next week and 2 weeks internship), there’s not much time to finish off all the remaining course work!

Here’s what I have to do.
-Video news package
- Review
-Photo assignment #3
-Photo assignment #4
-Photo assignment #5
-Photo assignment #6
-Bi-cultural assignment
-Bi-cultural feature
-Diversity feature
-Council meeting story #2
-Feature profile
-Video written assignment
-Observed interview

I have no idea who and what I’m going to write my features about, which is scary…need to do some investigating. Just found out I passed my court exam so excited about that! =D

By the way, I am no longer writing general news stories as I’ve passed the required limit, so thanks to everyone for their story ideas over the year!!

Better get back to work ;)

Where your paper comes from

Last week Witt Journalism ventured into the Taranki Newspapers’ printing press – it’s just two doors away from our newsroom actually, but we’d never visited until now.

Seeing as we are going to be playing around with video next weekish, I thought I’d edit a quick clip together so you guys could see where your Taranaki Daily News, North Taranaki Midweek, and South Taranaki Star come from. Enjoy!

Wrap up

This week has been insane!

For my first internship, I’ve spent the last five days with the Taranaki Daily News reporters and photographers.
It’s been a really interesting eye-opener, that’s for sure! There’s a lot of pressure to have multiple story ideas to ptich and complete during the day, and I’ve managed to do that so i’m really happy.

It’s been really exciting working with the chief reporter and photographers on stories, and being in their newsroom to type up and organsie the stories. They have special software that deals with the stories and photos, and that has been cool to use instead of Microsoft Word in the Witt newsroom next door. Getting feedback from other journalists and the chief reporter has been really good, and I’ve managed to work on some areas so my next stories will be even better.

Huge thank you to everyone who sent me newstips this week – I owe you all a beer! Also a big thanks to our tutor Robin Martin, who has made sure all five of the students who were interning were looked after and kept busy. He did a great job subbing our stories and giving us ideas.

Next week, this group (Tahlia, Gill, Corey, Sam, Zac and myself) is off working on radio stories, to be broadcast on Access Radio Taranaki each weeknight at 5.30pm. So if you’re around, have a listen! The group that did radio this week will be here at the daily, and that group includes Taryn Utiger and Jimmy Hick so expect some really good material in next week’s papers.

If you have any stories, please feel free to still let me know as I could use them next week in radio, and also pass them on to next week’s group of students. Everything helps!

Time for me to have a bit of a break from writing! Have a great weekend :)
